About
I'm Sunmi Han, a pianist with a soul that’s as nomadic as the melodies I create. My journey, both physical and emotional, has taken me across continents, inspired by the diverse cultures, philosophies, people, and music that I’ve encountered along the way. Through my music, I find my voice in telling stories that transcend words.
After completing my bachelor’s degree at Juilliard, I realized I was still searching—not just for my identity as a musician, but as a person. That’s when I moved to Tel Aviv for my Master’s degree, craving a space both geographically and spiritually removed from the familiar. From there, I ventured to Munich, where I spent seven years exploring new depths of my artistry.
Eventually, I felt the pull to return to the States. I realized that I needed a community—a place where I could share the story of my journey and connect with others to build something beautiful, a community where music is the language that binds us all.
Music
I find a special connection when working with singers (especially baritones), violists, and clarinetists. There’s something about the mid-range voices and instruments that really resonate with me—it's like I can truly find my own voice and color when we play together. That being said, I’m not at all opposed to mixing it up! I love the dynamics of ensemble playing in any setting. Whether it’s percussion or guitar, making music with all kinds of instruments is always a joy.
When it comes to composers, I’m especially drawn to Brahms, Schumann, and Beethoven. Their depth speaks to me. Every now and then, I have been exploring Schulhoff’s world too. Right now, I’m diving into Copland’s work and Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations. Oh!! And there’s a composer named Jörg Widmann whose music I absolutely have to share with you—his solo and ensemble pieces are sincerely captivating. Schulhoff + Schumann + Widmann = the greatest combination of music!
