if you forget me – Shadow Monologue No. 2 (For Camden Archambeau) (2024)
Benjamin Britten
Suite No. 1 for Solo Cello Op. 72
In 55 minutes of music, this program traverses the range of three centuries of music for solo cello. Beginning with Bach's magnanimous C Major suite, this program pairs the contrapuntal perfection of Bach's prelude and dances with the varied pantomime of Britten's 20th century masterpiece, dedicated to the great cellist Rostropovich. While their language differs greatly, the two suites share an appreciation for historical forms, and challenge the sonic possibilities of the solo string player. The many theatrical characters of Britten's work are given their own overture in the work written for Camden by composer Ethan Chaves, a "shadow monologue" with reminiscences of Wagner, folk-styles, and his own distinctive sound.
