We are thrilled to welcome award-winning Korean-American concert pianist and organist Junghoon Park for a solo piano recital.
This concert will celebrate the rich tradition of American music with an all-American program featuring works by Vladimir Horowitz, Art Tatum, Amy Beach, Samuel Barber, George Gershwin, and Leonard Bernstein, including Gershwin’s iconic Rhapsody in Blue and selections from Bernstein’s West Side Story.
Junghoon Park, an award-winning soloist and music director, is the principal keyboardist at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church. A graduate of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where he studied under Drs. Audrey Andrist and Alon Goldstein, he has performed internationally and earned recognition at prestigious competitions.
Junghoon has appeared at major events such as the National Music Festival, the Wonderlic Competition, and the International Keyboard Institute Festival. He received the Special Honors Award at the 2016 Paderewski Competition and was a top-12 finalist at the 2017 New York Piano Festival. Recognized as a Rising Star in 2018 for his interpretation of Earl Wild's Etude No. 4, he continues to captivate audiences with his expressive artistry. In 2025, Junghoon received the HCAC Creative Arts Grant for performing artists and now serves as an artist on the Maryland State Arts Council's touring roster.

Where does this music come from?
Tonight’s program traces several strands of the American piano tradition and the ways they have influenced one another. It begins with concert music shaped by the European classical tradition, but quickly moves into distinctly American voices, including Amy Beach and Samuel Barber, whose music helped define an American concert style in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Jazz and popular music are equally important to the program. Art Tatum transformed popular songs such as Tea for Two and Tiger Rag through extraordinary virtuosity, harmonic imagination, and improvisatory freedom. George Gershwin brought jazz, popular song, Broadway, and classical concert music together in a way that became central to American musical identity, especially in works such as Rhapsody in Blue and music from Porgy and Bess. Leonard Bernstein continued that conversation, combining classical technique with jazz, Broadway, and the rhythms of urban American life.
The program also includes virtuoso arrangements associated with Vladimir Horowitz and a work by living American composer Mark Maarder. Taken together, the recital reflects a musical lineage in which classical music, jazz, popular song, and theater continually borrow from and reshape one another.
