The evening will be rooted in the Carnatic music tradition of South India. The Veena duet with Kapila and Krishna will feature various improvisational forms (ragam, thanam, kalpana swaram, etc.), and signature compositions in the tradition. Percussive accompaniment by Arvind on mridangam, a double-headed percussion instrument will also involve a solo (thani).

Gather at @5:00 PM to meet and greet the artists. Concert starts @5:30 PM. The setting is going to be casual with a mix of chairs, floor seating and lawn seating. You can also bring your dog as long as you can keep it under a leash and not disturb the artist performance. Kids welcome if they are able to sit for the performance without disturbance to the artist.

This is a potluck so feel free to bring a snack, preferably ready to share and not requiring any prep at the event. Chai and cookies will be served by the host.

What's the music?

Kapila Chandramouli (he/him) Veena (South Indian Lute

We'll present a mini concert of sorts, including a few signature compositions in our style. We'll also explore various improvisational aspects, including thanam, a pulsating improvisatory format which our style is known for. Please join us for a relaxed, meditative experience.

Where does this music come from?

I come from a rare Veena tradition in the Karaikudi lineage, which spans over three centuries. We are particularly known for our precision with the instrument, and in recent generations have merged instrument and vocal traditions to form a more cohesive art form.
