Step into a luminous sound world where devotion, innovation, and imagination converge with Canticle of the Sun, a season finale from Voices of Ascension on Thursday, May 21 at 7:30 PM at the Church of the Ascension in New York City. Led by guest conductor Beth Willer—founder of the acclaimed Lorelei Ensemble—this bold program brings together spiritual reflection and contemporary vision, anchored by the New York City premiere of Sofia Gubaidulina’s Canticle of the Sun. Written for cello and chorus with text by St. Francis of Assisi, the work radiates intensity and reverence, brought vividly to life by cellist Tommy Mesa and organist Jon Gillock.
The evening continues with a series of striking premieres and immersive works, including the East Coast premiere of Ellen Reid’s Oscillations: 100 Years and Forever—featuring newly reimagined NYC visuals—and a world premiere by Celeste Oram, alongside transcendent music by Olivier Messiaen. With Groupmuse Nights Out discounted tickets, this is a rare chance to experience a concert that feels both timeless and urgently new—where choral sound, solo virtuosity, and visionary programming come together in a space of breathtaking resonance. 🎶✨
