Time was that when Brahms published his newest symphony, if you didn’t happen to be in a town with an orchestra ready with a local premier, you fell in love with the piece through the piano four-hands arrangement, perhaps played in the living room of a friend. That was how major works circulated before the days of recorded music. And so was birthed a robust and profound literature for piano four-hands.
The Celebrity Series of Boston is celebrating that deep, diverse, and under-appreciated body of work and they want us to join for a Night Out!
They’re bringing through two of the most celebrated pianists in the world, both hailing from the UK:
Paul Lewis, raised by a working class family in Liverpool, has become one of the 21st Century’s truly monumental Emperors of the Ivories. He’s so good that in 2016, he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire for playing piano.
Scottish-born Steve Osborne has collaborated with Lewis for years and he’s also one of the UK’s most beloved pianists, performing almost annually at the BBC Proms.
They’ll keep very close quarters for the evening, both sitting at one magnificent piano, sharing the 20-fingered reveries of French masters: Fauré, Poulenc, Debussy, Ravel, and Stravinsky (only almost French, but undoubtedly a master).
Tickets for an evening of such titanic talent at the legendary Jordan Hall typically run $60 — but it’s Groupmuse after all, so we’ve got a stack for only $20! But it’s limited, so make your move!
And have a great Night Out!
