About

Joanna began her journey into Hindustani music in 1997 at the University of California San Diego. That year, Joanna came to Kolkata and fully devoted herself to the study of the Maihar style of sitar playing under the guidance of Pandit Deepak Choudhury, a senior disciple of the renowned Pandit Ravi Shankar. Returning to the United States in 2005, she had the honour to attend classes at the Ali Akbar Khan College of Music with Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. She now continues her life-long journey with regular classes with Sangeet Research Academy Guru Pandit Partha Chatterjee and Sarodia Bruce Hamm. She teaches private and group classes and performs in a variety of venues worldwide.

Music

I play Raga on sitar. Classical Hindustani music goes back thousands of years. Sitar is taught directly from Guru to student. Each musician is expected to have learned the repertoire and then be able to improvise, adding their own unique voice, while adhering to tradition.
